    Slovenia is among the few countries in Europe with built terraces on the almost whole territory of the country. Terraces appear in all types of Slovenian regions, but differ in the percentage share, the purpose and the contemporary function. The territory of Slovenia is very complex in terms of landscape diversity; it is in the interaction of the Alps, the Pannonian plain, the Dinaric Alps and the Mediterranean, and is influenced by German, Hungarian, Slavic and Roman culture.

    Slovenia is a member of the ITLA (International Alliance for Terraced Landscapes). The detailed systematic inventory of the cultivated terraces was carried out using LIDAR DEM data with the cell density of 1 m. LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging), a relatively new technology compared to traditional methods for representing terrain surface, has

    advantages and Digital Elevation Model (DEM). The most important characteristic of the new method is reliability for detecting the exact boundaries of the terraced areas. The work results of the researchers have highlighted the value and importance of the terraced areas that deserve to be preserved for the future generations.

  • 2016 DISCOVERING TERRACED AREAS IN SLOVENIA: RELIABLE DETECTION WITH LIDAR

    LIDAR

    LIDAR data offer an unprecedented accurate new interpretation tool for detecting terraced landscapes. The boundaries of terraced areas in Slovenia cannot be clearly defined without the help of a field survey even when the configuration of the terrain makes surveys difficult. The segmentation of point cloud data into various classes of foliage, ground, buildings, and so on makes previously hidden earthwork structures (including abandoned terraces) instantly recognizable. The conceptual shift is that the LIDAR slope analysis layer is more revealing and instructive for discovering terraces areas than orthophoto images ever were. Although LIDAR data are a new tool in the search for terraced areas, orthophotos remain important but are nevertheless only a contextual aid. A quantitative comparison between the old and new methods shows no difference in three pilot areas, shows only a minor difference in two cases, and reveals major differences in three pilot areas. The quantitative differences in some of the pilot areas are compelling. However, the most significant feature of the new method is its reliability for detecting the exact boundaries

    of terraced areas.
